Why Discipline Alone Won’t Get You Unstuck

If you’re feeling stuck despite trying over and over again, it might not be because you need more discipline.

When discipline backfires

Focusing on discipline and only managing our behavior can have the opposite effect of what we intend. Discipline changes outward behavior without addressing our internal reality. We can stick to the routine, hit the goals, and look like we’re growing, while internally nothing has changed.

That’s the deception. Our behavior can improve on the surface and convince us we’ve done the real work, when the root of the struggle is still untouched.

Why behavior is never the starting point

Our internal reality is what dictates our behavior. What we believe, how we see ourselves, and what’s going on in our hearts is the source, and our actions are the fruit. If we only trim the fruit, the same thing keeps growing back.

The Bible speaks to this when it talks about strict regulations:

“These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.” (Colossians 2:23 ESV)

Rules and rigid self-control can look wise. But they have no power to change us at the level where change matters.

What you actually need is transformation

We have to undergo the process of renewal in our soul, because that is the place everything flows out of. When the inside is renewed, the outside follows naturally, without forcing it.

None of this means discipline has no value or is never beneficial. But if you’ve tried it and still feel stuck, it’s likely because there’s something deeper to be dealt with.

Starting internally

This is why my life coaching focuses on holistic transformation. It’s not just about making a budget or improving career goals. It all starts internally.
